Recently we were talking with a friend about change. She’s made some Chosen changes in her personal life and is quite excited about her plans. However, there are members of her family who aren’t seeing the change the same way she is. They are reacting with quite strong emotions which is causing stress and conflict.
To support our friend, we shared these change cycles based on the work of Elizabeth Kubler Ross. What might be happening is a Chosen and Unchosen clash – which is very normal! Maybe you are also experiencing a change clash in your work or personal life?
Here are some tips we shared with our friend which might help you too:
- You’ve had time to think through your Chosen change. Give others time as well. Share the ‘WHY’ of your change and the benefits you see.
- Don’t assume that others will see your Chosen change the same you do. Invite them to share how they feel and really ‘hear’ them. Allow them to feel what they feel.
- Keep talking and listening. With your support, others may start to see the benefits of the change.
- Change is not easy, but with communication and consideration for others, you will get there.
